Bug Description

Binary package hint: xscreensaver

Normally, after resuming from suspend the screen is locked and an unlock dialog window is in the middle of the black background asking for my password.

Since an update this week, it often happens that after resume the whole screen turns white and only the mouse pointer is visible. However, that unlock dialog window must be somewhere there, because
a) I can unlock the screen by typing my password and pressing enter, and once unlocked, everything works fine;
b) if I move the mouse around the screen, the cursor changes if it is above the area where the password input box is supposed to be.

Thanks for your report. What kind of hardware and graphics card do you have? Please attach lspci output and paste in the output from: lspci -nn|grep VGA

Right, I could have think of it when reporting the bug...

It is a Lenovo T61, with an nVidia video hw built in.

$ lspci -nn |grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M [10de:0429] (rev a1)

I'm using the proprietary nVidia driver 169.12. But note, that I'm using this version of the driver since about a month now, and never had similar problems before the update made two-three days ago.

I can confirm that bug using updated clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 RC amd64 on my Thinkpad T61 with nvidia quadro 140M

Also sometimes instead of white screen i get black screen with a rectangle in a place where screen unlock dialog should be located. When i enter my password screen unlocks and everything seems to work just fine.

Does this happen only with xscreensaver, and not with the default gnome-screensaver?

I'm having the same issue after upgrading to 8.04. I don't have xscreensaver installed.

It happens when resuming from suspend. Just a blank white screen with the mouse cursor. After I enter the password everything is fine. I do get the Compiz close animation (set to burn) after entering my password, if that helps.

I was researching another issue - I had a file in /etc/acpi/resume.d to turn off the LEDs on my XPS laptop when resuming, and it stopped being run after the upgrade. It looks like things were switched to pm-utils with 8.04. (I created a file in /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d to kill the LEDs.) Perhaps this has something to do with the change to pm-utils?

I guess this is all due to suspend, and not to xscreensaver or gnome-screensaver. Can you please verify this, by disabling or uninstalling the screensaver?

@Tormod: I've tested suspend/resume with screen locking disabled (by setting gconf key /app/gnome-power-manager/lock/suspend to false) and after resume my desktop (because without lock there is no screensaver active i think) looked just fine.
It may be somehow connected to the compiz effects (some plugin or compiz in general). I have tested suspend/resume with effects disabled and screen lock prompt showed just fine. Unfortunately suspend on my laptop is a pain in the !#@$ because of hard lockups.. Maybe someone with better hardware can do few more cycles? ;]

I had the same problems upon resuming from suspend on my Acer Aspire 9303 laptop ( White screen and mouse pointer. Typing my password worked ) I noticed it only happened when Compiz was enabled, which I needed to run AWN, however I enabled Metacity Compositing ( http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/03/31/enable-metacity-compositing-in-gnome-222/ ) which works with AWN and I no longer get a white screen and cursor, alternatively try the debdiff suggested in https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/160264

 As a side note does anyone experience a "cloud effect" in the bottom-right of their LCD, just after pressing a button to resume, followed by the LCD backlight turning off and back on? I've got a nVidia Geforce Go 7300 ( Binary driver version 169.12 )

Following an upgrade from Dapper to Hardy I get a white screen when switching users. Turning off visual effects seems to have provided a cure, but not a satisfactory one
