Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Having found there were updates for Ubuntu this afternoon, I looked through the list and found a couple I knew I did not want. I unpicked their check boxes and started the update process, only to see in the console output at the end that they were installed anyway. This is obviously not expected behaviour.

I've double checked in the package manager history and they have indeed been installed:

Commit Log for Fri Apr 18 12:50:36 2008

...
Installed the following packages:
icedtea-gcjwebplugin (1.0-0ubuntu5)
...
openjdk-6-jre (6b09-0ubuntu2)
openjdk-6-jre-headless (6b09-0ubuntu2)
openjdk-6-jre-lib (6b09-0ubuntu2)
...

I made sure I unpicked these packages as they have caused trouble with Eclipse in the past.

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 (beta, of course) and update-manager is version 1:0.87.18.

Thanks for reporting this. Could you please attach the file /var/log/apt/term.log from the update session so we can take a look at what is going on. I wonder if it is possible that the you removed these packages but then they got pulled back in as dependencies of something else.

For example the command
sudo apt-cache rdepends openjdk-6-jre

returns the output
openjdk-6-jre
Reverse Depends:
  jabref
 |freemind
  solr-common
 |project-x
  openjdk-6-source
  openjdk-6-jdk
  openjdk-6-demo
 |libwoodstox-java
  libswingworker-java
  libqtjambi-java
  libnb-svnclientadapter-java
 |libnb-platform7-java
 |libnb-platform7-devel-java
  libnb-javaparser-java
 |liblucene2-java
  libini4j-java
 |libhiglayout-java
  libbeansbinding-java
  libappframework-java
 |libaccess-bridge-java
 |jedit
  icedtea-java7-jre
  icedtea-gcjwebplugin
 |freecol
 |azureus
 |openoffice.org-writer
 |openoffice.org-officebean
 |openoffice.org-base
 |openoffice.org

so if I understand correctly all these thing depend on openjdk-6-jre. I should say this is complete speculation on my part so I could be wrong

Here is my term.log for the session.

Apparently libaccess-bridge-java was installed (and I don't remember explicitly unpicking it - or in fact seeing it in the list). If this caused OpenJDK to be installed, why wasn't it removed when I unpicked the OpenJDK (as icedtea-gcjwebplugin was)?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
