This is probably a gstreamer issue, I get the same error for .spx and ogg audio.

It is quite likely that this is some sort of artifact form running under kvm, I do not have working sound there, it may caused by this.

I also get this same error when playing mp3 and wmv (didn't test any others). It started after updating my system today.

I have a similar issue running Ubuntu Hardy from live cd. The audio plays but the video doesn't play. "totem --debug Experience\ ubuntu.ogg" doesn't display any error messages. So I'm confirming this bug.

I have reproduced the same result with :
live session from : Ubuntu Hardy release candidate
live session from : Ubuntu hardy daily image from 20-Apr-2008 08:16

I get the same problem when testing the final release candidate of ubuntu hardy desktop i386 under kvm. The problem goes away if I use the GNOME sound settings to configure sound playback to use "ALSA" instead of "Automatic" (which translates to PulseAudio).

Would be nice if someone could get a backtrace for these assertions, just install all the relevant debug packages (glib, gstreamer, ...) and call gdb with G_DEBUG=fatal_warnings

FWIW I just fixed a problem which sounds related (I also had very slow, choppy video playback in totem/gstreamer along with these same errors) using the totem instructions here:
http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup

I used gstreamer-properties to make the changes, but they show how to do it through gconf, too. Might be worth a try for some here.

the message is similar to bug #191027, does changing the audiosink to alsa workaround the issue?
