horizontal scroll scrolls only one way

Bug Description

Steps to reproduce:
0 Install Ubuntu 8.04
1 Add "Power Manager Brightness Applet" to a panel.
2 Enable "Gnome menu/System/Preferences/Mouse/Touchpad/Enable horizontal scrolling". (Maybe this works with a mouse with a horizontal scroll wheel to?)
3 Position the mouse pointer over the brightness applet.
4 Scroll left -> It gets darker.
5 Scroll right -> It gets darker. *BUG*
6 Scroll down -> It gets darker.
7 Scroll up -> It gets brighter.

Other programs (like firefox) get the horizontal scolling right so it seems not to be a mouse driver issue.

thanks for the report, do you get the same with the volume applet? is this reproducible with another app which is using the volume widget like rhythmbox? or totem?

Gnome Volume Applet (2.23.4) seems to ignore horizontal scroll events.
Totem (2.23.4) and Rhythmbox (0.11.6) show the same behavior: both left and right scrolling decrease volume.

thank you for your bug report, could you use those scrollings in xev and copy the log to the bug?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

I do not have a real mouse with horizontal scrolling. I emulated this with synaptics touchpad driver. I tried to enable scrolling in general on my jaunty system and failed. On a freshly installed intrepid system vertical scrolling works out of the box but I cannot get horizontal scrolling running.
I will report when synaptics works again for me.

I can reproduce this bug with 9.04
(Both, mouse button 6 and 7 decrease brightness on the brightness applet.)
