Bug Description

When you try to attach a file from a SMB location, you receive the following error message:
"You cannot attach the file 'smb://fileserver-1/sharename/documentname' to this message"

This problem occurs whether you try to drag the file from the SMB share location or use the Attach button in Evolution. If you move the file to the desktop, and then drag it to the message, the file is attached as expected.

This problem does not occur when you attach a file from a remote location by using ssh.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
Please include the following additional information, running the following commands:
$ apt-cache policy evolution
$ lsb_release -rd
Can you run evolution from a terminal with the debug option and attach the output file?
Thanks in advance.

doesn't work for me too when I'm trying to attach a smb file from a authenticated resource.
If I connect to a guest share, attachment it's ok.

I get this output in .xsession-errors:

connection_message_func(): Callback
CALLBACK: fill-authentication!!!
connection_message_func(): Callback
CALLBACK: fill-authentication!!!
connection_message_func(): Callback
CALLBACK: full-authentication!!!

Can you confirm this situation ? Thanks.

where is your smb share, maybe is a samba share or a windows share ? Can you add guest permissions to the resource and connect to it, and then try to attach a file ? thanks in advance.

- connect with nautilus to a smb share with security user.
- try to attach a file to a message in evolution.

My SMB share is on a Windows Server 2003-based file server.

When I enable the Guest account in Active Directory (by default, this
account is disabled) and add the domain\Guest account to the share-level
permissions on the SMB share, I can attach a file to an e-mail message
successfully.
I am not prompted for credentials and the file is immediately attached.

Thank you!

I am having the same issue when I try to attach a file that is hosted on a windows computer on the network into my gmail account. I click the "attach link," browse to the network folder, then choose the file. When the file choosing dialog returns and disappears, there is nothing in the attachment file path box in gmail. I have to copy the file to my local machine, then attach.
