on one of my computer working (select, search, deselect) in synaptic makes the cpu go to 100%.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04?

I'm getting this on 8.10 Didn't do this initially clean install 2 days ago but has just started. This is what I did just before problem occured.
Marked a few of packages for installation.
Changed mind (closed synaptic rather than unmark)
restart synaptic.

Now maxes out CPU for about 5 mins when marking/unmarking/after installing/removing

2.6.27-9-generic,

I'm loosing this machine in a couple of days but I should be able to access over VPN so my responses may be delayed

OK, think I've got it.

Remove or rename the file synaptic.socket in /var/run

Synaptic is now working good again.

After fresh install of 9.04 on clean disk and using
sudo top
100% cpu is reported for Synaptic for a couple of minutes after marking a number of packages to be installed and when installation completed. Problem remains after all updates have been installed and machine restarted. This does not happen every time packages are selected or installed. It looks like a problem that arises when the list of packages is refreshed.

me too, on a fresh 9.04 install, 100% cpu when I use synaptic

I no longer think this is a problem with just Synaptic, but a problem with large list boxes in general.

+1, fresh 9.04 install on recent hardware, 100% CPU on selection/deselection and anything related to updating the packages

FWIW, suggestion to "Remove or rename the file synaptic.socket in /var/run" does not have effect for me.

got hit by this bug on fresh install of lucid lynx. x86 .
high cpu usage for ~3-5 mins when selecting packages in synaptic then it's ok during package installation and then high cpu usage again for ~3-5 mins right after installation. Please let me know if there is any information I can provide.

I should add that prior to lucid I'd been using hardy on the same machine for 2 years straight with no signs of this problem.
Lucid was installed fresh last night. I hope this helps

The bug is still there in Maverick and mostly happens when refreshing the entire list of packages. For example, when you go from the search results to the list of installed packages.
