Bug Description

!! Upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy on Dell Inspiron 530 just failed badly. Apparently stopping at some ata related error.

After the first reboot the system stalls, Alt-F1, shows only
[ 88.206802]ata1.00 revalidation failed(errno=-5)

Having no success forcing reboot again, I tried to fall back to previous kernel but NVidia drivers were not engaged and the hardware drivers panel falls over silently so the resolution is very badly off/unusable.

Trying recovery mode on the new kernal doesn't work but provides a little more.. the ata related ones start
qc timeout(cmd 0x27)
failed to recover some devices
failed to read native max address err_mask=0x4

argh.. I'm going to have to reinstall Gutsy and stick with it from fear of this happening again.

I should maybe have also suggested that I can't get to a command line with the new kernel as it's stalling partway through the initial loading.

I'm expecting using the old kernel is atm a mix of alsorts of old and partly new, and certainly it's running so slow I think it must be confused.

On the plus side the upgrade of my laptop went fine :) ho hum

Thanks for your bug report. This bug is a duplicate of bug 153702 so I mark it as such. A workaround to fix your issue is to go in the BIOS of your computer (F2 at boot), then go in "Integrated peripherals" and then change "SATA mode" from "IDE" to "RAID". Note that when changing IDE to RAID, if you also have Windows operating system on your computer, it may stop booting with RAID since Windows is not able to use "real SATA" without additional drivers.
