Bug Description

Kwin doesn't make any sound when I move between desktops neither when I minimize windows, etc.
I'm on Hardy Heron at April 15th. However I can listen to music. It's strange because I have the notification sound enabled, and it worked on Gutsy, but when I upgraded, it stopped working.

I've said Kwin to say an example, but i have the same problem with Kopete...

Thank you for filing this bug.

I am not sure that this is related to notifications, but can you check that kded4 is running?

Do other KDE 4 application's sounds work?
Or are they only working for KDE 3 applications maybe?

Ok then it is the same problem I had.
I solved it by deleting .kde4/share/config/phonondevicesrc and logging out and in again.

Can you move that file away and test it?
If that solves your problem please upload that file here for further examination :)

:) You are welcome.
Now someone with a better knowledge of Phonon needs to find out why this happened in the first place.

I had the same problem here when upgrading from 4.03 to 4.04. Lydia's fixed worked fine. I'm guessing that they changed the format of the config file and the old one messed things up.

I confirm. This issue is in kde 4.04 and not in kde 4.03. Lydia's fixed works for me.

I feel like an ass. The fix worked for me but then I fiddled with some settings and now it has stopped working again and so has the fix.

I managed to fix this again by restoring the original phonondevicesrc and restarting the computer. Then I could delete the file and log out and back in and the fix works again. However, I just put my computer on suspend and sound stopped working again. I there any way to get around this issue?

@swiftscythe
Could you upload the working phonondevicesrc so we could compare the two? Thanks.

If anybody else had this problem, it would be helpful if you could attach the working and non-working rc files too.

I have something similar on an ACER Aspire 3618, 1.8GHz Pentium M 735A, 2 GB RAM Laptop. I've recently installed Intrepid Ibex (8.10) Alpha 6 on this machine and when going to Notifications and setting them for KDE Windows Manager on Maximize, Minimize, the normal "windows sounds", these are the default sounds I'm using, No sound is heard when doing those functions to a Window. If you get real close to the speaker you can here a click sound as if it was trying to play. I did as above with no change. I really don't know if this is the same as here, but it really sounds very similar. I'm attaching my old file and new file as done above.

Not related, sorry.
I think there is some misconfiguration in the ALSA libs, please check it's bug reports.
