Bug Description

In Ubuntu 8.04 (Beta) if you choose "Switch user", does not matter how, either in screensaver, or by System->Exit->Switch user, the system stops responding and the only way to make it works again is a hard reset. I suppose that this is a bag of video driver, I use fgrlx driver.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I can confirm this bug on recent daily build of 8.10. I'm using notebook Toshiba A200-1ZB and fglrx video driver. After a try to switch a user through applet black nothing but black screen appears, and the only way to go is to do hard restart. It seems like new xserver is started for new user session and that hangs just at the begin of startup process...

Hi veprus,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

I've posted a new version of the -fglrx driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

Dear Bryce,

I've tried your new driver, but I was no able to install it completely. At some point it says that a library is needed (I do not remember, what library) and then the computer stop responding. After this it is not possible to start system in graphical mode (does not matter, what driver is in use). The only possible way is to start system in text supervisor mode and manually delete all drivers. Now I have no time to find the problem, as soon as I have time, I'll try to make a report.

Today I had time. I've fixed all problems with old versions of packages and installed the new fglrx driver. The problem is not solved, my system still stop responding after "Switch user".
