Bug Description

Binary package hint: amarok

amarok 2:1.4.9.1-0ubuntu2
kdebase 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu6

amarok doesn't depend/recommend kdebase-kio-plugins which seems to be required to get "Configure Portable Player Support" autodetection working (at least this is the case for my iPod). The package doesn't get installed when installing amarok in GNOME environment, including all the Recommended packages.

without kdebase-kio-plugins "dcop kded mediamanager fullList" returns 'call failed', with package installed devices are detected okay. The dependency was included in version 2:1.4.5-0ubuntu1, but dropped without corresponding changelog entry.

Please provide the dependency back.

Harald, do you have any idea why kdebase-kio-plugins is not installed as amarok dependency ?
Thanks.

Seems like the dependency got lost during last merge 2:1.4.7-0ubuntu3 --> 2:1.4.7-2ubuntu1.

the reason for the pkg not being a dependency is because amarok will still function with out it. plus not everyone has an ipod.

yes, amarok does function, but introduces a regression compared to earlier releases. Possibly other media devices are affected as well as "dcop kded mediamanager fullList" call fails without the package or its depends.

You can still manually configure the devices. Which makes kdebase-kio-plugins the perfect use case for recommends - it enhances the application's functionality but if the package it is missing the application is working just fine as well.

But to give a more understandable reason for not having kio-plugins a dependency of Amarok: it pulls in a lot of kdebase packages/applications which are totally unnecessary when you are using gnome (kdesktop, the desktop shell, as a prominent example).

Therefore Jonathan's patch is more accurate.
