Update manager repeatedly fails, shows this error:

'E:Dynamic MMap ran out of room, E:Dynamic MMap ran out of room, E:Error occurred while processing manderlbot (NewVersion1), E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

I have added the line

APT::Cache-Limit "16777216";

to /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/70debconf but this has no apparent effect.
