Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Ubuntu 7.10

When screensaver preferences is active (gnome-screensaver) the display doesn't refresh on the square occupied by the screensaver preview. My video card is ATI mobility Radeon 7500 C. The system recognizes it as "Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]"

for example, when the screensaver preferences is active, any window that comes on top of it, doesn't refresh on the square of the screensaver preview.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I have finally test gnome-screensaver in the same computer with Hardy... This bug is now not present in this release. Although, I'm confused. I have the same system but now I can't change the appearence preferences to maximize visual effects.... I could maximize the visual effects in Gutsy but not in Hardy: The preferences menu tells me "Desktop effects could not be enabled" I have the same video card as before!

IMPORTANT.....

THE BUG IS STILL IN HARDY!!! DON'T MATTER MY LAST POST.

Because I didn't have any advanced visual effects I tried some workarounds found in the post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=764633

Which is basically adding the line:

SKIP_CHECKS="yes"

to the compiz program. The visual effects are now present and working correctly but the gnome-screensaver window still has the bug described in my first post.

I too have the same problem. I have attached a screen-shot of what is happening. Basically, the whatever program is on top, gets pushed behind the preview. When moving the preview window, it leaves a trail of images of the preview. The screen just fails to refresh, even hitting F5 at the desktop to refresh the desktop does not work. The only thing to clear the extra images is to drag another program over that portion of the screen. It makes it really hard to choose my power management options when I can't even see them! I am running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. I had the same problem in 8.04 by the way. My card is a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950.

I don't think that my problem is Compiz related as I was not using anything related to Compiz at the time of my writing. I have since installed and use Compiz. Now I have other applications doing this same thing while before it was only the screen saver application. So while I do think that the other apps have these problems that are related to Compiz, I do not think that the screen saver problem was related to Compiz. Therefore, this is not a duplicate.
