Laptop sound button doesn't work in Xubuntu (can't mute, turn up or down sound with buttons)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xubuntu-desktop

these buttons works in GNOME. sounds work but just can't be set with laptop buttons.

I'm using Hardy and I don't think they ever worked for older releases. I have a Ubuntu Beta installed then apt-get install xubuntu-desktop. I do dist-upgrade everyday.

Closing this bug as adding the panel applet is required for this functionality. Furthermore, Bug #220948 will see that the mixer is enabled by default in Intrepid.
