Looks like this is fixed in 4.68.8-1 (covered by bug 204546)

I have same problem when I try to upgrade from version 4.58.9-2ubuntu1 to
4.58.9-2ubuntu1.2

I have tried to solve this by editing script /var/lib/dpkg/info/mailscanner.prerm but no luck so far...

as a quick and dirty work-around stop mailscanner and then edit /etc/init.d/mailscanner and add exit 0 to the top of the do_stop section.

Ok, now I have mailscanner upgraded to 4.58.9-2ubuntu1.2. I had to add "exit 0" also to top of do_start section.

Ubuntu Intrepid no has the 4.68.8-1 version, this should include the fix from Debiam.
