In my case the external drive don't have permission.
Steps:
1 Reboot. Then I has a disk (500GB name)
2 I see /media/ directory and see only the disk '500GB' but WITHOUT permissions
3 I pulse the gnome icon for the disk '500GB' and open BUT now I have
/media/500GB and a new disk with permissions /media/500GB_
