Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description does not yet have enough information.
Could you attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ ?

On another note, after rebooting the VM, after the hard lock. Running updates, via update manager, seemed to 'finish' the upgrade process, and as of yet have not noticed any other problems.

It looks like there is also a gedit crash here:

Setting up gedit (2.22.1-0ubuntu1) ...
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
dpkg: error processing gedit (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 139

What crash files do you have in /var/crash ?

Looks like gedit and python, permission denied errors

Hi,

There's unfortunately no further information for the gedit problem
in the crash files you posted.

Thanks,

James

Hi,

The python-central problem looks just like bug 205470.

Thanks,

there's an update, currently in the queue due to the archive freeze, which at least helps debugging, and probably fixes this issue.

the issue is not a gedit one, the installation uses no gedit binaries

After a hard reboot, and a continuation of the update/upgrade, all packages
appear to working fine, with no issues. This apprently was during install
only issue.
