Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Ubuntu ISO Image - Ubuntu 8.04 beta AMD 64 bit edition (downloaded 6th April 2008)
Motherboard - Asus A8N-E
Graphic card - Asus Extreme AX300SE-X
GPU - ATI Radeon X300 SE

The Desktop effects in Ubuntu 7.10 worked perfectly with my graphic card with the ATI Radeon X300 SE graphic processor and with the restricted ATI driver activated

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 beta (on the same PC) and activated the ATI restricted driver but the desktop effects dont work properly with the graphic card mentioned above.

After activating the desktop effects when i open and close windows especially firefox windows, the windows open with a graphical distortion which lasts for a few miliseconds after which the windows appears normal.

Another thing which has changed since Ubuntu 8.04 beta is that during the boot process the boot logo has a low resolution and hence not sharp and clear. With Ubuntu 7.10 it was just perfect, the boot logo was of proper resolution and was sharp and perfect, also due to the ATI driver compatibility i guess.

That is all i have to say.

Please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Your card should be supported by the open -ati driver, with 3D & compiz too AFAIK.

The usplash resolution issue has been fixed since beta, if you install using the livecd-installer. You can edit your /etc/usplash.conf to match the screen resolution.

Thanx for the quick response :-)

I have attached the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, please see attachement.

you said -- "The usplash resolution issue has been fixed since beta if you install using the livecd-installer" -- but i dont know anymore if it was a livecd-installer or something else. I will try to reinstall using livecd installer and report again, may take some time for that though.

As you suggested i edited the /etc/usplash.conf to match the screen resolution 1280 x 1024 but the problem still exists i.e. the boot logo still has a low resolution, but its funny though while shuting down the ubuntu logo has the perfect resolution.

Note: I totally have only around 10 hours of hands-on exp. with linux and am completely to new to the Unix/Linux world so please be patient with me :-)

I hope you can tell me more after seeing the log file.

Regards
Curio

As of Intrepid (8.10), we have a dedicated package 'fglrx-installer' for fglrx bugs, which now includes a process for upstreaming bugs to AMD.

  http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer

To transition your bug into the new fglrx-package, we need your help. Please do the following:

 a. Verify the bug occurs in Intrepid.
     (Intrepid ISOs: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com)
 b. If you haven't already, please include in the bug:
     * Your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
     * The output of `lspci -vvnn`
     * Steps to reproduce the issue
 c. Click 'Also affects distribution'
 d. Set 'Source Package Name' to 'fglrx-installer'
 e. Click Continue

Thank you. This will assist us in reviewing and upstreaming your fglrx bug, as appropriate.

[We'll expire the fglrx bugs in l-r-m-* in a month or so.]

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
