Bug Description

I have downloade the ubuntu beta, but I can't boot it,
I earlier had the same problems with the 7.? versions both 386 and x64 version. (unresolved but posponed till now, I hope )
The machine doesn't always hangs, mostly it gives me a command prompt sayint (initramfs), but sometimes it just loops stating (*) (see further down in msg)

I have tried the options mentioned in http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-148761.html

1) noapic nolapic
2) noapic acpi=noirq
3) noapic acpi=off
4) noapictimer
5) noapictimer irqpoll
6) noapic acpi=off
7) noapic acpi=noirq nolapic

and none works,

* It seems like it is a disk problem, during boot i get a message: [
  ide: failed opcode was: unknown
hda: drive not ready for command
  hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady Seekcomlete datarequest }
]
sometimes it seems to detect my drives and attached them as sda and sdb
I don't know how to verify [sda and sdb] is actually my hdd's, and wheter my cdrom is mounted correctly,
I have tried to mount /dev/sda which I suppose is a ntfs drive, but it says [ no such device ].
I have tried to mount a usb drive which when inserted is recognised and made avaliable on /dev/hdc, but when I try to mount it i get [ no such device ], this means that I cannot post my dmesg :(

By the way, I have to disable splash and quiet during booth if I wan't to see what goes on, otherwise I just have blackscreen.

help I am running vista and xp now for 6 months

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I tried the alpha 5 release, apparently no luck, when booting in normal mode I only get two messages:
Kernel alive
Kernel realy alive
Then nothing.

If i remove the 'splash' and 'quiet' from the boot flags, I see that it detects my cpu's then freezes with information about starting some virtualization I think. I will reboot and check again.

Hi Christian,

Sorry for the delayed response. Could you try the latest Beta release and if the issue still exists, when you boot with the 'quiet' and 'splash' options removed could you take a digital photo of your screen when it hangs and attach it to this bug report. It would be nice to see what is exactly printed. Thanks.

Tried the new beta, still no luck. I have attached a photo, due to my high-gloss screen, I have enhance the text to make it easier to read.

I got further... or something different at least using

noapic acpi=off

I have snapped so much data as I could in the uploaded images. The computer keeps looping with the error message in 15.png.

Thanks Christian,

Can you also try booting with the "all_generic_ide" boot option to see if it helps? Thanks.

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . If the issue remains in Jaunty, Please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic 215057

If you could also test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
