[Hardy] Keyboard doesn't work at all after booting to the installer (Right after reading from the CD, not in any system yet)

Bug Description

Hi.

I just downloaded Hardy Beta 32-bit Alternate and threw it into the CD-Tray.
I booted up from CD and saw the Ubuntu logo with the usual menu "Install Ubuntu", "Check CD for Defects", "Rescue a broken system", etc.

Unfortunately, the keyboard does not work at all at this stage.
Since there is no automatic launching of the installer after 30 seconds (as is with the Live-CD), I am stuck here.
None of the keys work (except the Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock LEDs can be controlled with the corresponding keys).
ESC doesn't work.

It is a PS2 keyboard. I tried plugging it out and in again, but that has no effect either.

I will try that now with different keyboards and check whether the Live-CD does the same.

I will report how it worked.

Nevertheless, this must be fixed.

regards

Using a 32-bit Hardy Heron Beta Desktop-CD the above error didn't occur. Installation went flawlessly.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in linux the kernel for Hardy Heron.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Have you verified the md5sum of the iso you used to burn this CD? Have you also run the CDs integrity check? (on another system since you can't navigate to that item.) Thanks in advance.

I did run the CD-check on another PC and it went through flawlessly.

Besides, I discovered that Hardys installation media now automatically prompt you for your preferred language.
If that is right, it doesn't seem to be caused by the keyboard not responding but it seems that the whole system just freezes, since I am not asked which language I'd prefer.

Anything else I can provide?

regards

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have experienced this bug with the 64-bit kernel and a USB keyboard. Once I install Ubuntu it goes away. I've only tested it with the Live CD

I just downloaded and booted the LiveCD version of Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha 6 (64bit desktop version). The keyboard now works for me at the install menu screen. It doesn't work for me with any of the Hardy 8.04 versions at the install menu, but does work once 8.04 is installed to the hard disk..

@Thelasko, can you specify if 64-bit kernel you experienced this issue with was the 2.6.27 kernel from Intrepid? Your last comment was a little vague.

@dennda, since you are the original bug reporter, can you confirm this is no longer an issue for you with Intrepid?

@Wifi Ed - thanks for testing and the feedback. I'm glad to hear this is resolved for you with Intrepid.

@Leann Ogasawara, It was in Hardy. I can't remember the kernel version number (it was shortly after Hardy came out). I haven't upgraded to Intrepid, so I don't know if it's still a problem.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . If the issue remains in Jaunty, Please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic <bug #>

If you could also test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
