Thanks for your bug. Could you comment on your issue? What version of
totem/ubuntu do you use? Do you use totem-gstreamer or totem-xine (the about box
say it)? Does it happen with all the DVD? Are they crypted? Have you installed
some packages to play DVDs?

The standard Ubuntu installation is not good at playing DVD for legal reasons
(we can't ship the tools required for that). Maybe you can read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com//RestrictedFormats on the totem, they describe how to
install totem-xine and libdvdcss2. You can also try to install gstreamer0.8-dvd
package.

Hi,

different symptoms to the original reporter. When I try to play a DVD, totem crashes
and I get a crash dialog ("The application totem has quit unexpectedly").

Running totem dvd:// from gdb shows that the problem appears to be in the ffmpeg
package:

all my other gstreamer0.8-* packages are version 0.8.11-0ubuntu5. I suspect this
bug (well, at least my one) should be re-assigned to the ffmpeg package.

If I remove gstreamer0.8-ffmpeg, then totem doesn't crash, but instead says
" ** Message: don't know how to handle video/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)2,
systemstream=(boolean)false" and plays blackness.

Ignore me, my problem was (mostly) fixed after I installed gstreamer0.8-plugins
which installed extra packages like gstreamer0.8-mpeg2dec and libmpeg2-4. After
this totem didn't crash on startup for dvds.

Please use different bugs for different issues. If you interested to track this
one and to get a debug backtrace could you open a new bug for it?

now totem uses gstreamer0.10 which has a different set of issues, that bug is deprecated, I'm closing it. totem with gstreamer0.10 doesn't play DVD well for the moment (no menus, no subtitles selections), there is other bugs opened about that
