preferred apps:

email client: Evolution mail client

Webbrowser: user defined: /usr/lib/firefox-3.0b4/firefox "%s"

hmmm, that of course can't work as beta 5 got installed through update manager, so this is probably not updated correctly.
what should i select there, "ubuntu sensible browser" or "firefox"?

I can confirm having the same problem after upgrading to Beta 5. However, checking Preferrred Applications showed "Custom" under the Web Browser.

Changing to "Firefox" from the drop-down list resolved this issue for me.

hmmm, i can't remember having set the preferred application, i upgraded gutsy (where there is no firefox 3) to hardy and did not touch that setting. If upgrading to hardy changed that, than an update to the package should also take care of that, so I still consider it a bug.

I wish it was that easy to explain please check to what they are set at. it seems that path for firefox has changed a few times since gutsy and that is one reason this could be seen.

could'nt there be a kind of a check if the preferred application is set to the default, and if not just ask during upgrade what to do, with a warning that it may be that the path to the current application has changed. If I change config files in /etc, I'm also asked if I want to keep my changes or accept the config of the maintainer.

Another thing is, that if the preferred application can not be launched, a Message should be shown to the user, as I've seen the message only on the console.

Firefox doesnt check this because it has no reason to in your case, please file bug with gnome or evo. not sure what one would control this.
