Bug Description

When I play games or use blender or any program requiring my GPU, I like to switch to metacity window manager. When I switch back to compiz, awn icons are sometimes located in the wrong place (cf screenshot). It comes backt to normal a few seconds later.
*I'm using fedora 8
*installation via repository
*version 0.2.6
*video card GeForce 4 TI 4600 nvidia driver

What version of Metacity do you have?

If you're using a version of Metacity that's < 2.21, then I'm going to guess that Awn screws up because Metacity doesn't have compositing support. The next major version of Awn (0.4) is expected to have non-compositing support.

Hi!
My version of Metacity is 2.20.2, and awn is not visible when I'm using it, so I guess that it is a bit lost when I switch back to compiz.

Setting milestone to 0.4 (because of the need for non-compositing support). Basically, with the current Awn, if compositing is turned off while Awn is running, Awn will act in unpredictable ways because it expects that compositing will always be on.

I upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy, and the new metacity had compositing on. I could not enable desktop effects, and awn had funny behavior, appearing at the top of the screen, instead of the bottom. The bar was not lined up correctly, the icons didn't have uniform size, etc. I found the fix was to go the gconf-editor and turn off compositing under apps/metacity/general. Just after clicking the check box to uncheck it, I had to restart xorg, by using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. Then I could enable desktop effects, and awn appears at the bottom of the screen and works as expected. This was on a Dell 600m which uses FireGL graphics. I hope this helps someone.

I have also this behavior when switching from Metacity to Compiz using the latest trunk from PPA repo (0.3.1~bzr264-hardy1-1).

I uploaded a package on my PPA of avant-window-navigator (version 0.2.6-7ubuntu2~ppa1) that may have a workaround for this. Can someone test with this version and see is the bug still here ?

I proper fix should be with the 0.4.0 release.
