Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-15-generic

After restarting to the new 2.6.24-15 kernel the network managers in both ubuntu and kubuntu were unable to use correctly my network card. While in manual configuration I could change the ip address the subnet and the gateway the network icon indicated my computer as disconnected. After trying to apply the new preferences I received a network interface disabled error. I then executed the following commands:

sudo ifconfig eth0 up
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

After that I was connected to the network but the icon was still indicating "disconnected". After each system restart I had to do all the above to connect again. Kernel 2.6.24-14 works just fine.

The system is Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron

Unfortunately for me, the solution Rebug proposed doesn't apply to my situation. When I boot into the 2.6.24-15 kernel the network manager report me as disconnected. The result of this is firefox switching to off line mode and the applications in general not trying to access the network. But manually I am able to access the network and I can connect without problem to this computer via ssh.

I forgot to tell that when my system starts with the 2.6.24-15 kernel I receive a HAL couldn't start error.

I also get the "HAL couldn't initialize" error. No LAN - hardware isn't seen - I suspect due to on HAL
Also, cannot shut down or restart from GUI - system freezes.

Having to use previous kernel version 2.6.24-14-generic, which works.

My problem was because of the saa7134 tv card. As described here. To fix this I had to blacklist both saa7134 and saa7134_alsa modules.

Hi Haris,

I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of bug 212271. The kernel devs are still working on a solution. Thanks for your patience.
