Installer partitioner always at 33%

Hardy server install, up to the partitioner no problems at all.

Partitions set, they get written, but when the format starts the progress report starts and remains at 33% all the time. It does not stop or break, it progresses to the next part of the installer once it's done, but just jumps there from the 33% mark.

This is not related to the partition size it seems.

This happens in basically all cases where libparted isn't smart enough to deal with creating the partition and we have to use external tools. It's been like this for a long time and is rather hard to fix.
