Hi being new to this the only help i can offer is to give a run up to
the events start . After a new install of Gutsy using existing home
partition, reinstalled Thunderbird through synaptic ,no apparent
problems . all Folders back in place , computer running all night .
next day return to wake computer , check mail (new mail arrived ) went
to open mail , there was the problem , it closed and cotinues to do so .
The only way to be able to read new mail without the close sydrome is
to, right click the new mail item and select reply . it only happens to
new mail since gutsy install , all old mail opens as normal

                      hope this is of some use to you , regards Pete

ps. just found that it is now closing whatever message is selected

Please provide a crash log or a strace if there is no crash log in /var/crash, To reproduce crash and get the needed info please follow instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs but use thunderbird instead of firefox and for strace instructions please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Strace

I get no crash log. The program just closes as it should close one mail and open another.

Hello Pete,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird. You made this bug report in 2008 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
If it is still a problem, are you still interested in finding a solution to this bug?
If you are, could you let us know and, in the current version, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect 211380
and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
