May be related to
bug 210458
because loading:
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24
seemed to cause the problem

Today`s upgrade was all about Linux kernel version 2.6.24-14 generic and Open Office.org.
The exact text on warning window "The greeter application appears to be crashing. Attempting to use a different one". Clicking away this window will show a white pointer on black screen.

Two options to solve the issue;

*Recovery mode>>recovery menu offers "root shell prompt" I need the command/code to continue. (no internet connection while in recovery mode so not possible for me to update/upgrade)

*Ubuntu files on the hd are accessible using "Knoppix live-cd" how to procceed?

*The /boot/grub/menu.lst>altered to show only one kernel instead of all. Could this be a problem to give live back to my Ubuntu 8.04!?
