can not install an update,

i have ubuntu 7.10

I was notified by ghe orange and white icon that an update was available,
when i tried to download/install i got the following message

A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Problem parsing dependency Depends, E:Error occurred while processing kuickshow (NewVersion1), E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_gutsy_universe_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
usually, the update manager is right on and has not problems, so i am a little worried about it
