Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

While going through the steps shown at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HardyUpgrades to upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04 beta, the upgrade failed while "calculating new packages" (or some such, I can't remember the exact name displayed). It displayed an error dialog saying it couldn't calculate the update, and asked me to report the bug and attach the log files from /var/log/dist-upgrade/. After I clicked OK it restored the system state and left me with a working 7.10 system (at least it seems to be working fine).

I am running 7.10 as a guest OS under VirtualBox on a Windows XP host OS.

Thank you for reporting this bug and making Ubuntu better.

Did this just recently happen? There is a current issue with the version of linux-restricted-modules not being able to be installed which is causing problems and I see that mentioned in your logs:
Investigating linux-restricted-modules-generic
Package linux-restricted-modules-generic has broken dep on linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-14-generic

Changed in update-manager:
status: New → Incomplete

More information for you: Since you are just now upgrading hopefully you can still boot into Gutsy (7.10) without issue. Best course of action is to wait until bug 211066 is resolved.
