Windows installer problems (0.45 to 0.46)

Bug Description

I installed inkscape .46 on a win XP machine using "Inkscape-0.46.win32.exe" downloaded in 1st April. As I already had .45 installed, the installer asked if I wanted to remove it first, which I did.

However, when the installer then moved on to install 0.46, it refused as the directory was not empty (I wanted to install into the same location as the previously removed version of inkscape).

The problem, it turned out, was the existence of "uninst.exe" in the install folder, presumably from the uninstall of a previous version. I deleted uninst.exe and .46 installed with no problem.

Should the uninstaller just delete everything in the install folder to ensure removal of any old crud, or should the installer some-how cope with an install directory that is not empty?

Also please look at two problem mentioned here:

There do seem to be some installer issues that need to be looked at.

The workaround for this one seems to be to find the old Inkscape in the start menu, and use the uninstall icon that is with it.

I set a milestone, as i think this could be easily solved, and more than one duplicate bug about this subject show that it annoy enough people to be corrected fast.

I fixed this particular issue before 0.47 was released (the installer had had _?=$INSTDIR being passed to it which meant it didn't copy it to TEMP before running it and thus it couldn't delete itself). There's another problem with uninstallation not clearing everything, but the problem with not installing to a non-empty directory is fixed (and the old uninstaller leaving itself there on upgrade), and there are other bug reports containing the new issue. This one is closed.
