Bug Description

Not sure if this is actually a bug or not. But i have the feeling, that my laptop does not get so hot, when running windows. Does anybody have the same laptop and can confirm this? Also the CPU is running most of the time with 800MHZ. (lowest possible)

root@compaq:~# cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ*/temperature
temperature: 60 C
temperature: 59 C
temperature: 56 C
temperature: 53 C
temperature: 33 C
temperature: 60 C

My desktop system under gutsy ran with temperatures in the 25C to 35C

I upgraded to hardy very successfully losing nothing but now the temperatures are in the 45C to 50C range

Same situation on HP dv9623ca AMD 64x2 Turion runs at about 800 mhz most of the time but temps are up over 60 degrees idle and into 80 degree range under load, fan never seems really run, this is on hardy.

My comment is spurious - one of the case fans had seized - bad timing makes for lots of confusion.

Same for me.

I updated yesterday from 7.10 to 8.04. While my Laptop (Samsung R50, 1,7 Ghz) has already been quite hot under ubuntu 7.10 (~55C idle), the core temperature reaches now 70C idle and hits 85C easily under load. The situation became unbearable and I decided to reinstall ubuntu from scratch and I opted for XFCE without compiz. The Situation did not change. This Problem does not seem to be related with either the Window Manager or a particular application. Even when I kill the X System, my laptop won't cool down substantially.

I'm experiencing similar problems with Hardy. My laptop is at 54 degrees Celsius idle and creeps up to 70C when heavily loaded. I'm guessing it has something to do with Linux and Ubuntu not being able to properly keep the processor(s) in an idle state.

Wow, I just found a thread on the Ubuntu forums from Ares Drake, which describes cooling down your PC by lowering the cpu's voltage. I tried it out, and my laptop runs cooler. In addition, I gained an extra hour in my battery life (up from 2hrs to 3hrs)! Here's the link:

I can confirm this issue. I think the the problem causes the powerstates, which are not supported.

Another 8510p here.

I'm currently using Vista because of this.

Under Ubuntu the fan is always blasting with hot air. After about 10-20 minutes of usage under Hardy (usage = internet browsing), it will be around 70 degrees celsius, more if flash or java are being used. Under Vista, the temperature sensors consistently average around 47 degrees celsius. I've experienced this sort of heat in other version of Linux with this laptop like Fedora 9 and OpenSUSE 11.

There is actually a specific spot on the surface that gets very hot and I believe that the processor (Core 2 Duo T7300) is under it. Another possible source of heat could be coming from the Radeon HD 2600.

It could also be dependent on the atmospheric temp .If you live in hot countries a temp of 60 is a pretty trivial issue to be concerned about

Same here - 8510p on Intrepid:
$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ*/temperature
temperature: 60 C
temperature: 60 C
temperature: 57 C
temperature: 54 C
temperature: 39 C
temperature: 75 C

Fan in running almost all the time when on AC - even with the option disabled in bios (with the latest version).

Please note that in WinXP this does not happen.

I've studied similar problem with a lot of 8710W users and in the end it poured down to DSDT tables which had something odd going on: when temps reached a certain trip point the fan started blasting but after that the tables are updated and it's practically impossible to reach again a temperature that would trip a lower level of fan speed.

See here (8710w): http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=253102

You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Jaunty (with ATI proprietary drivers; the measures above are with Intrepid and ATI OS drivers):
cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ*/temperature
temperature: 45 C
temperature: 45 C
temperature: 40 C
temperature: 38 C
temperature: 25 C
temperature: 35 C

I think that all this might be related to the GPU (ATI) and its drivers. I have noticed a major change in fan's activity when I have switched from OS ATI drivers to the proprietary one. It behaves similar to Windows.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

Just a quick note: I havent experienced this problem in a long time with 8510p nor 8710w after installing the latest beta ATI and NVIDIA drivers (via kanotix scripts). With those versions present in the repository I had constant problems. I haven't used them since so I'm unable to confirm whether a possible newer version might have obsoleted this bug report.
