Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

This is bugging me since Feisty and it just doesn't get fixed.

Reproduction:
1) Open Firefox in unmaximized state
2) Maximize Firefox
3) Close Firefox
4) Open and Close Again (only neccessary for FF, epiphany for example doesn't need this step)
5) Open Firefox
6) Umaximize (restore?) window
--> Window has lost its unmaximized state and has the size of the whole screen

This only occurs with desktop-effects enabled, metacity handles it just fine.

I tried this on 5 PC's and all ubuntu versions since feisty - and everyone of them has this bug.

Hey, this definitely happens. You can try it with almost any window - gedit, firefox, epiphany, even gnome-sudoku. Would be nice if someone could at least verify this :) As already stated, it happens in all ubuntu versions with desktop-effects...

From Hardy desktop-effects blueprint:
"There should be as little breakage as possible moving from metacity to compiz in terms of behaviour, keyboard-shortcuts and themes."
To me that is definitely different and non-expected behaviour from metacity - or does it count as only "little breakage"?

To test on Nautilus :

Open nautilus, unmaximized.
Maximize it
close it
open nautilus, it will be maximized
umaximize it, it won't take the initial size

Statut changed to confirmed

I can confirm with Firefox 3 Beta 5, Compiz and Hardy. Firefox will take over the whole screen and the only way I can get to another window is to either press ALT+TAB to switch to another application or restart X. It happened out of the blue today and I cannot see anything that I could have dome which has caused the problem.

Hm, I'm afraid that's a different bug... In my case Firefox doesn't maximize over the whole screen, it just forgets its unmaximized state. Perhaps you should file a new bug :)

Just wanted to add that this bug is fixed in Ubuntu 9.04... all windows remember their original unmaximized state.
