firefox will not open local files from remote files

Bug Description

I'm using the Firefox 3 beta 4 backport I found in one of the other bugs in backports.

When there is a link to a local file in a remote file (I noticed this at https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/programming/C/ar01s01.html), Firefox will not open it when clicked, or in another tab. If you copy the link location and do it manually, it works fine.

I'm not sure if this is a feature or a bug however. It seems to be annoying, but I may be overlooking security concerns.

Daniel

note: Is this in the right place? I wasn't sure.

I can reproduce this on Hardy, let's move this bug report into Hardy. (I'm also unsure if this is a bug or just a security feature with a poor UI

The error console says: "Security Error: Content at https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/programming/C/ar01s01.html may not load or link to file:///usr/share/doc/diveintopython/html/toc/index.html."

But I agree that the user interface should be improved.

Agreed. Perhaps a drop-down bar informing the user that the link was blocked for security reasons and allowing them to continue (with appropriate warning, of course).

is this still a problem with the latest ffox 3? If so, this is best dealt upstream as its not a ubuntu specific issue. Please search in bugzilla.mozilla.org to ensure that your bug isnt filed; then open a bug in bugzilla.mozilla.org and post your bug id (or the one you found matching your issue) here. Thanks!
