Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Changed in gdm:
status: New → Invalid

Hi,don't know how to take output of gnome terminal but would like to
know if you have time to explain. However the output of terminal is
exactly;

gdmsetup[6151]: CRITICAL: Error opening file: no such file or directory

After repeating this many times the GUI will pop up and seems to work OK
although i will reboot now to find out if the login screen has changed
to Gnome.

Chris.

seems that your install is broken, you should try to reinstall the gdm package and see if that make it work better

Try to get a crash submitted as Pedro suggested.
Try reinstalling as Sebastien suggested.
To get stuff out of the Gnome terminal, you can right click and copy or press Shift+Ctrl+C

Unable to submit crash report there isn't one.
Reinstalled GDM which fixed problem here until reboot when it returns, still get 'CRITICAL: Error...' if sudo gdmsetup run from terminal.
Any amend to gdm from gdmsetup also produces a slow shutdown and 'LIBHAL shutdown failed' error message. This corrects itself after reboot and i get a normal shutdown.

Can accept this may be an oddity to do with this machine only and if so apologies for submitting an bug report. But i am not certain it is.Best Wishes Chris.
