Panel expansion is handled poorly

Summary:
When some applets place an icon in the panel, other panel icons are pushed off to an expanded panel. This expanded panel is available by clicking a down arrow on the panel. This opens a panel width drop down with the icons that were pushed off. There are several issues with this method. Primarily the expanded bar is white. This is inconsistent with the main panel.

I would like to suggest we re-evaluate this method of handling panel expansion. I would like to see a sideways expansion when you mouse over an arrow facing to the right. This would temporarily crunch the other panel inhabitants so all panel icons could be displayed.

Steps to Reproduce:
1) Launch an applet that places an icon in the panel.

Expected result:
1) Expansion of panel is handled gracefully and attractively

Actual result:
The current method of panel expansion using an inconsistent color feel like an afterthought.

this feature needs further discussion, New Moblin UI spec v 0.8 has a different panel extension design, which is described similarly with Chris.
