Bug Description

HPLIP on Hardy Ubuntu/Kubuntu doesn't recognize the preconfigured printer. Xsane/Kooka is also affected. Scanner apps have to be run as root to work. Temporarily solved by adding user to lp and scanner groups. Confirmed with other printer brands/models on Ubuntu forums.

We'd be grateful if you would provide a more complete description of the problem.
This information can help you in debugging printing problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Reporting 2 different issues into the same bug report is not a good idea, it is better to file seperate bug reports in that case.

Can you provide a link to the forum threads?

Thanks!

HP PSC 1510 all in one is preconfigured and prints fine by default. I opened xsane/kooka to test the scanner, and they would not detect it. I usually have to install HPLIP to set up my scanner. I installed HPLIP, and it said no devices were detected. I removed the preconfigured printer, and set it up again with "sudo hp-setup" in a terminal. After the printer was installed, HPLIP still said no devices detected. Xsane/Kooka still would not detect my scanner. At this point I was sure it was a problem with permissions. I then added my user to the lp and scanner groups, rebooted, and everything works perfectly. I should not have had to give my user those permissions to use HPLIP or scanner apps.

Your right. I didn't find that in my search before I posted the bug. That is exactly what is happening. Can we delete this bug report?
