Kubuntu boots to black screen

The system fails to boot properly. It starts, but after Grub the screen remains blank and the system does not respond to anything, including keystrokes.

Workaround to make the problem go away:

When booting, press "e" in the grub menu and then remove "splash" argument from the kernel command line.
