Totem should give a dialog saying libdvdcss2 is required, instead of saying it can't read the disk.

Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I just bought the movie 'I am Legend', I inserted the disc into my drive and totem opened automatically but I get a message wich states that it cannot read the disc. The terminal outputs the following message endlessly looping:

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1571 ***
*** for c_adt->cell_adr_table[i].vob_id > 0 ***

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1573 ***
*** for c_adt->cell_adr_table[i].cell_id > 0 ***

*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1575 ***
*** for c_adt->cell_adr_table[i].start_sector < c_adt->cell_adr_table[i].last_sector ***

This movie plays fine with my home DVD player.

I have this same problem on Hardy 64-bit. I'm not sure if it is a libdvdread problem or a totem problem though. If vlc or mplayer use libdvdread and the de-css lib you can install for it, than it is likely a totem bug as mplayer and vlc on my machine play back DVD's fine, only totem and elisa fail.

Did you install css? For amd64 there seams to be a bug in the install-css.sh

sudo gedit /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

You see following two lines:
#available="alpha hppa i386 ia64 powerpc s390 sparc"
available="i386"

Replace the with
available="alpha amd64 hppa i386 ia64 powerpc s390 sparc"
#available="i386"

Save the file and do a "sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh".
This worked for me.

I don't know if the bug is from Debian, Ubuntu or libdvdread3.

Totem should be able to show a GUI to the end-user mentioning that libdvdcss is required for copyrighted dvds and be able to download the .deb by itself once the user allows it, an and-user just simply wont know what is going on

Marcos: So is it 'I Am Legend' in particular giving you problems, or can you not play *any* commercial DVDs?

If its this DVD in particular, its likely because it has ARccOS copy protection, which most DVDs don't have.

This happens with all commercial DVDs. Unless I installed libdvdcss, there should be a GUI for this installation, an end-user just wont know how to do it. I know theres a script under /usr/share/doc/libdvdread/ to install libdvdcss, but an enduser just wont like opening the terminal just to watch his DVD.

This bug just started for me on DVDs that were working yesterday - dmesg also has a whole load of I/O errors in addition to the ifo_read.c messages. mplayer also hangs/fails.

The libdvdread part is fixed:

available="i386 amd64 powerpc lpia"
available_old="sparc"

Leaving the totem task open, as a GUI would be nice for this, even with the appropriate legal issues..

If there are legal issues a disclaimer and a warning not to click on the 'Ok' button would be great :)

My Ubuntu 8.10 package manager had the libdvdread3 and dependancies all done nicely but i didn't know there was this issue until flicking through the forums on a cold rainy day here in England
