can't open pdfs

If a pdf file is attached to an email message, right-clicking and selecting Open does nothing.

In 23.10, clicking an attachment opened a dialog asking to save or view via an app (okular).

How do I get it so I can view attachments in this "better" flatpak version of thunderbird?

I have also tried setting Thunderbird's settings for Files & Attachments to "Use /bin/okular". The pdf files are still not opened.

As a workaround, I can save the pdf files and then open them with okular. But WHY do I have to do this in a roundabout way? It used to "just work" seamlessly!

I'm also running into this problem, which appeared after the Ubuntu upgrade, which switched thunderbird from .deb to a snap package.
In the dmesg output I see several apparmor messages concerning thunderbird. I'm not sure which of them -- if any -- relates to the issue, but I strongly suspect that apparmor in connection with snap is to blame. I had similar issues when chromium switched to apparmor (they were solved in subsequent snap releases of chromium, though, mostly some pathes were missing in the whitelists). Here are the messages:
