The fixes listed in these bug reports don't work anymore because the rely on the deprecated file /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules

Summary:
Files on the camera (canon SD850) are only listed if sudo is used. The user is in the following groups

  Linux| brad@kubuntu > groups
  brad adm dialout cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev fuse lpadmin admin

If sudo is not used to read the camera the following gets displayed:
  Linux| brad@kubuntu > gphoto2 -L

  *** Error ***
  An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'): Could
  not claim interface 0 (Operation not permitted). Make sure no other
  program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is using the
  device and you have read/write access to the device.
  *** Error (-53: 'Could not claim the USB device') ***

If sudo is used to read the camera the following is displayed.
  Linux| brad@kubuntu > sudo gphoto2 -L
  There is no file in folder '/'.
  There is no file in folder '/store_00010001'.
  There is no file in folder '/store_00010001/DCIM'.
  There are 5 files in folder '/store_00010001/DCIM/100CANON'.

side note, can you provide us the USB id for the SD850? Just run "lsusb" with the camera attached,

Yup, in essence this is a dup of bug 205417 and it appears to be fixed with the most recent updates. awesome.
