Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I was trying to upgrade my Ubuntu 7.10 to Hardy with update-manager -d.

The first time it freezes at the end of the first stage (Preparing to update). After waiting half an hour I killed it. It didn't give any relevant message on stdout/err.

It keeps the lock file, so next time it says "Unable to get exclusive lock".

sudo do-release-upgrade --devel-release works the same way.

Same happening here.

I have a little terminal output;

neilw@neilw-laptop:~$ update-manager -d
extracting '/tmp/tmpiyGVkL/hardy.tar.gz'
authenticate '/tmp/tmpiyGVkL/hardy.tar.gz' against '/tmp/tmpiyGVkL/hardy.tar.gz.gpg'

Then the Distribution Upgrade window greys out and nothing more happens.

A look in the logs comes up with this;

neilw@neilw-laptop:~$ cat /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log
2008-03-26 17:45:39,353 INFO release-upgrader version '0.87.12' started
2008-03-26 17:45:40,015 DEBUG Using 'DistUpgradeViewGtk' view
2008-03-26 17:45:40,198 DEBUG lsb-release: 'gutsy'
2008-03-26 17:45:40,198 DEBUG _pythonSymlinkCheck run
2008-03-26 17:45:41,738 DEBUG checkViewDepends()

I'm happy to perform more testing and provide more logs etc if needed.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Could you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade to the bugreport? Is the freeze reproducible? If so, could you please check if /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log is still growing while it appears to hang?

The freeze is totally reproducible on my system ;(

/var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log didn't grow at all in ten minutes on my system, it just stayed at the original size.

Same problem here.

I should notice that I have done Edgy > Feisty > Gutsy and now > Hardy upgrades on my laptop. Don't know if it could help.

I could provide any other log but I have exactly the same as Neil.

based on the attached log files this seems to be a duplicate of bug 186465. Marking this as a duplicate, please follow further development in that thread

I use this method to get by the problem:

kill the frozen process, it's called 'hardy'

apt-get install python-kde3 pykdeextensions
cd /tmp/tmpXXXXXX$ sudo ./hardy --frontend=DistUpgradeViewKDE

Hope it helps
