I am also seeing this bug in Hardy. I have a fresh install ( xen guest from a hardy bootstrap ). I goto install, it asks me for my mysql root password. I give it a password and then it fails.

I found the problem in my installation to fix my bug. The loopback network interface did not have an IP address assigned to it, hence mysql had nothing to bind to.

I also see this problem while using the Ubuntu Hardy server install CD. After entering the root password for mysql, the CD installer hangs. After about 10 minutes or so, it finally moves on.
