Hi,

Was your database server running at the time of this upgrade?

It sounds like it could be a manifestation of

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2008/03/msg00772.html

Thanks,

James

Hmm, seems like server might have not been running already before starting the upgrade, so I think yeah it could be the same issue as described in the message you pointed to.

I guess you can close this issue.
Thanks.

That would be if pre-install fails, pre-removal doesn't try to stop it, anyway i'm working on pre-install to check if it is running before it try to stop mysql.

I too received the "subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1" upon trying to install this package.

It appears that the /etc/init.d/mysql script fails to shutdown mysql (even from the commandline).

As a workaround, I issued 'mysqladmin shutdown' and the mysql package installed without the 'subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1' error message.

When I attempted to re-start mysqld using the /etc/init.d/mysql script, I received the following errors (although mysqld did start):

/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' (using password: YES)'
root@cyph:~# ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
