Bug Description

When the mouse pointer is activating a tooltip, the screensaver never comes on (and the monitor doesn't shutdown if you have it configured).

It happens a lot when my daughter is on the computer and doesn't pay attention to where the mouse is when she leaves.

Can you give me an example of a tooltip that would have this effect. I tested this on Ubuntu 8.04.1 with gnome-screensaver 2.22.2-0ubuntu1 and even with my cursor on "Applications" (Tooltip: Browse and run installed applications) the screensaver still came on after being inactive.

When the mouse pointer is over a toolbar and a tool tip is shown all the time, such as in Pan News reader, and the screen saver dims the screen the tool tip is hidden for a short while and then shown again. At this point the screen saver is always interrupted and still shows the screen. This happens repeatedly.

Any gtk hint seems to trigger the bug. For example, try the gnome-panel. Tested is on Lucid.

It also prevents the monitor from blanking. Not cool.

I'm not so sure this is the same bug, because in this case there's not even a fade out. Or maybe the other bug has changed since the original post. In this case, the hint problem should be mentioned on the other bug (although it all suggests it's a GTK_WINDOW_POPUP window style problem anyway).

Reading the upstream bug, it doesn't seem to be the same bug really. Unless gtk implementation of hints grabs the mouse, which doesn't seem to be very necessary to say the least...

Flavio, hints need to know the location of the mouse to determine when to show and hide. Seems reasonable that they should grab the mouse.

Well, if the Hint objects manage themselves, yes. But in my vague memory gtk Hints didn't work like this (nor did on any widgetset I've seem).

Another thing that suggests this is not a duplicate: I can suspend and/or lock the screen (with Ctrl+Alt+L) while showing the hint.

I have spent the evening running down Gnome Screensaver bugs. [un]Fortunately, I cannot reproduce this particular bug on a fresh install of 10.04. I can point to things that show a tooltip, such as the panel menu, and after the timeout, the tooltip disappears and the screen is blanked/locked.

Changed to invalid. I have tried on a fresh install of 10.04 pointing to all of the tooltips I know of, and I simply cannot trigger this bug.
