Bug Description

Binary package hint: emerald

The repositories tab is missing in emerald-theme-manager:

Hardy beta, emerald version 0.7.2-0ubuntu2.

Fetching the source, I found that line 1558 in themer/main.c is commented out.

------------------------------------------------------------
void layout_themes_pane(GtkWidget * vbox)
{
    GtkWidget * notebook;
    notebook = gtk_notebook_new();
    gtk_box_pack_startC(vbox,notebook,TRUE,TRUE,0);
    layout_upper_pane(build_notebook_page(_("Themes"),notebook));
    layout_lower_pane(build_notebook_page(_("Edit Themes"),notebook));
// layout_repo_pane(build_notebook_page(_("Repositories"),notebook));

}
------------------------------------------------------------

Why? By uncommenting that line fetching both GPLed and non-GPLed themes work perfectly.

I have this problem too with the Hardy Heron beta. I just installed emerald from synaptic and there's no repositories tab. Where exactly is that main.c file and is it safe to uncomment that line? Are you sure it works how it should now?

This is also an issue in ArchLinux, so it's obviously an Emerald issue. WTF though?

can we get this fixed in an update?

shouldn't this be a feature by default, like in feisty and gutsy?

I like to see progress in ubuntu. I don't want to make it so easy for
new users that it becomes a joke for power users but I certainly don't
think that requiring new users to edit source code, then recompile, to
_get_back_ a feature that was previously there, is a good way to move
forward for the project.

I understand this may be partly down to the emerald developers also, but
the final say lyes with the ubuntu repo package coordinators.

having the convenience of a repo is one of the things we as linux users
boast about to our window$ friends. they should _just_work_. compiling
should left be for bleeding edge games and stuff that is not in the
repo's - especially for new users sake's.

this is ubuntu - linux FOR HUMAN BEINGS. If you I wanted to compile
everything I'd use gentoo ;0)

hope this make's sense, and clarifies why I believe this should be
merged back into the repo version as soon as possible.

k3ito

Is this some ridiculous attempt to fix the bug involving the repositories for emerald that were present in gutsy?

This bug is present in the final release of Hardy.

this bug was not present in gutsy, I used gutsy right up until the final
release of hardy on 24th April. this has been about from hardy beta up
until now.

ps: whats ridiculous about getting things to work with all features
available - from the off.

as stated before there are clear reasons for making stuff like this a
priority

I'm sat suing pidgin now walking through a new user how to get
theme's... it used to be pretty self explanatory - fetch gpl themes

non-gpl - do this (svn etc etc)

I'd love to know why you think this is ridiculous!

Its ridiculous because someone packaged a version of the theme manager with the repositories line commented out.

I fully agree that we shouldn't have moved backwards in functionality. I'd like to see the justification for this.

hilarious isn't it. I'm sure at some point _someone_ will realise that
not everyone is capable of rectifying this by editing source files
themselves - like my mum for one.

Alternatively you can follow the instructions here:

It's not a perfect workaround but it does the job.

How can we contact the package mantainer? he seems to not to lurk in here or have ever used emerald in hardy, after 5 months of keeping the same simple bug, you can easily tell he is not doing a thing in this package, I call for a mantainer change
