Windows go to behind others when clicking with mouse

Bug Description

After installing ubuntu graphics-drivers ppa nvidia-550 driver, the bug appears.

When there are several windows on top of each other, clicking within the topmost window, the window seems to disappear. Actually, the window is still there, but just goes behind another window, that comes in front of the clicked window. The program in the window that is clicked will not notice the click.

This does not happen with all programs. Mines is a good example program. If the window fills full screen, this happens, but if it is smaller, only partially covering the screen, it does not happen.

Thanks for the bug report. Please start by removing any local extensions:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

If the problem still happens then while it is happening please run:

  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

No change. After boot and login, I started firefox, then opened Mines on top of it, and clicking on Mines put it background. This time it seems that the game got the click, but it still disappeared behind the browser window.

journal.txt attached.

I suspect the bug first appeared with the introduction of the Nvidia driver because that switched you over from Wayland to Xorg. So this might be a Xorg-only bug.

I wonder if the system thinks you are middle clicking somehow. Try:

  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences action-middle-click-titlebar 'toggle-maximize-vertically'

> org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower ['disabled']

This doesn't look like a valid setting. In case this is causing confusion try clearing it with:

  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings lower "[]"

The nvidia driver 550 got an update yesterday. Installing the update seems to have solved the problem.
