There is a newer version

I just learned that the version 2.1.15 is a "very old version" (https://forums.ankiweb.net/t/anki-error-when-clicking-on-preferences/34018/2). In fact, this version was published on Mar 7, 2020, or even earlier. It's the oldest release in the github project (https://github.com/ankitects/anki/releases?page=6). I came across this topic because I cannot open the settings dialog (same as link above).

There is an up-to-date version 23.12.1.

We can see that all releases of ubuntu have +- the same version:

Is there a good reason why no newer version is in the repos?

This package is maintained in Debian and traditionally automatically sync'd from there, so that is the reason. You would have to ask the maintainers in Debian. https://packages.debian.org/sid/anki

Meanwhile, I created a ppa with the newest version 23.12.1, see https://launchpad.net/~hackie/+archive/ubuntu/anki/

Just packaging a new version seems difficult because the pipeline seems complex (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=958853), so I took a different approach and re-packaged the binary distribution.

I don't think invalidating this bug is the correct way to react. I think, this is a legitimate issue, as the old version is nearly unusable (because of this: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1010900)
