ubuntu/multiverse should only contain one nonfree flash plugin for
mozilla. right now it is provided by flashplugin-nonfree and flash-player

hm... multiverse.
there is no package flash-player in main/universe/
However the following packages provide flash plugins to the mozilla browser family:
1) flashplayer-mozilla
2) flashplugin-nonfree
3) libflash-mozplugin
Having both installed 1) and 2), firefox seemed to choose the first installed package for handling swf content.
The problem arises however after removing 1), because firefox couldn't handle swf content any longer.
This might be related to updates to the mozilla-firefox chrome registry handled in postinst.
