[Hardy] Dektop effect on Ati Xpress 200 - (Video) Performance problem ?

Installed Ubuntu 8.04 Beta, activated the proprietary ati driver. Desktop effect were activated by default.

In both totem and VLC video playback uses way too much CPU. (impossible to view a DVD on my system, cpu maxed out)
If I disable the Desktop effect everything is back to normal.

As a personal comment:
The Xpress 200 has always had a number a problem with ati drivers... the driver have been getting better recently however I think enabling desktop effect by default on that chipset might cause more problem that what it's worth.

I installed Hardy 12th April daily DVD, I had no ISP so no internet connection. So could do no updates.

Computer would login, 5 seconds go black then logout.
It would login to "GNOME failsafe" most of the time, but sometimes stop the rest of gnome loading after drawing the background.

switching to console ctrl+alt+f1 would lock up the keyboard and screen. Power button still worked; controlled shutdown.

I tried to make "GNOME failsafe" default with gdmsetup but I still need to select "GNOME failsafe" to login.

I'm sorry not have more info. (I never want to install with out internet connection again)

I have a problem like yours with the last updates on Hardy with an ATI card:

I solved the problem.

Give us the result of fglrxinfo.
If you have "Mesa", you have the disable the unnecessary XGL by just creating a file with the name "disable" in the folder ".config/xserver-xgl" in your home directory.

After that you should have "ATI" when you launch fglrxinfo

Here's my story that I think is closely related to the bug report here, if not the same:

I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (final) on a Compaq Presario V2610CA laptop, with an ATI Xpress 200M card. I'm using the fglrx ATI proprietary driver (available with the Ubuntu restricted manager) and desktop effects (Compiz) are enabled.

The problem is that as soon as Compiz is enabled, I can't play video using Totem (and within Firefox, using totem-plugin). Sound is working however. The problem doesn't occur if I use the open source driver, i.e. the ati (radeon) driver.

In order to correct the problem, I found that I have to issue the command "gstreamer-properties" within a terminal, then click the "video" tab, and chose "X video system (without xv)", instead of the "autodetect" setting in the "video output" section.

The same problem (and the same solution) applies for mplayer video playback.

The problem occurs whether or not I set VideoOverlay to "on" or "off" in my xorg.conf file (and whether this option is present or not). Here's the appropriate section of my xorg.conf file:
