Bug Description

It got dropped from Debian due to being obsolete and dead upstream. An alternative seems to be "mdadm".

We're still tracking it in Ubuntu "main" as part of the live-common seed and an Ubiquity Recommends.
The Ubiquity installer is depecrated, though. So we should consider dropping dmraid from main.

currently the idea is for ubiquity to not be in main for 24.04. There is a very high chance that this will succeed

for subiquity installers I expect that dmraid is obsolete, and that we are covered by the mdadm usage.

for ubiquity, there are still references to dmraid in partman.

d-i seems to have undergone a pruning step to remove dmraid support with commits such as https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/partman-base/-/commit/72735280fefab7e27acb4bbb1b6b83cb88f75611

I guess the idea is to get Ubiquity and dmraid demoted to universe, before 24.04 is released.

We might also consider disabling dmraid functionality in Ubiquitiy, and deleting dmraid from the archive. To avoid dragging obsolete packages around.

Please cross check with the subiquity folks that this is *actually* obsolete. The last I knew, it implemented support for firmware-assisted software raid systems that were not supported by mdadm.

Hello,

I just wanted to put in here that a user tried using mdadm to no success where dmraid worked[0]. As this is a package that you may need in order to boot (if fakeraid is supporting your boot drive), I think it's unwise to simply remove completely. It would feel bad not seeing your system boot after doing u-r-u.

This of course creates a vicious loop of wanting to support upgrades so we never remove this package, so we have to create the line somewhere.

For now, I say let's keep it in.

Maybe downgrade to universe until more confidence that mdadm (or another tool) covers the fakeraid scenarios users might be using.
