Cannot unmount volume

Bug Description

So I right-click on a partition on the desktop and select "Unmount Volume" and it spits this error to me.

Shouldn't it like offer me to type my password and unmount it or something?

If I want to unmount the volume, then it should let me, instead of say I am not privileged.
I am privileged to get updates, delete files, etc then I am privileged to unmount a volume too.

Hi,

I think this may be to do with nautilus, so
I am reassigning there.

Thanks,

James

Thank you for your bug report. What sort of volume is that and how did you mount it?

/dev/sdb1 is Ubuntu
/dev/sdb2 is Otherstuff

It is /dev/sdb2 which wont unmount. It is a ext3 partition. On a Samsung SpinPoint T166 250 gb SATA drive.
I did not mount it, it got mounted automatically on start-up.

Is this partition in your /etc/fstab? If so, you cannot unmount it as normal user.

If it is not in your fstab, please copy&paste the output of

  gnome-umount -vbd /dev/sdb2

and do

  lshal > /tmp/hal.txt

and attach /tmp/hal.txt here.

Yes, the partition is in my /etc/fstab file.

I use this account to get updates, and edit configuration files.
So why I cant use this account for unmount stuff?

I am using the account that the installer created for me.

For me, all the hard drive partitions in nautilus display eject icons, but are unable to be unmounted by the non-root user. Attempts to hit the eject icon result in the "Cannot unmount volume" message. I think that such partitions should either not display the unusable eject icon, or require the unlocking administrative password.

This is in Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, AMD64.
